How to add cross-sell products to your advice

To add cross-sell products directly to the cart, Add-to-cart URL mapping must also be enabled.

Product cross-selling
Once a shopper receives their advice, you can recommend relevant additional products to help them complete their purchase. For example, when recommending a laptop, you can also suggest compatible accessories such as a headset, keyboard or mouse.

You can display up to three cross-sell products per advice result.

1. Enable product cross-selling

1. Go to Settings → Results.
2. Enable Product cross-selling.

2. Map a cross-sell category

To display the right cross-sell products, Qonfi needs to know which category each product belongs to. For example, when recommending a laptop, you might want to suggest a headset, keyboard and mouse instead of three products from the same category.

1. Go to Feed → Mapping.
2. Map Cross-sell category to a field in your feed, such as Product category.

Qonfi uses this mapping to group products for that category and will recommend a maximum of one product per cross-sell category. Products from the same category as the advised main product (in our example, laptops) are automatically excluded.

When a product feed contains different product categories, such as software and hardware, the category field is often too broad for cross-sell purposes. A more specific field like product_type (e.g. Laptop, Mouse, or Keyboard) is better suited for selecting relevant cross-sell products.

3. Create matching rules

Matching rules determine which additional products can be recommended alongside the advised main product. You can use product properties from your feed to ensure that only relevant accessories are shown.

For example, when recommending a laptop, you might want to suggest a compatible headset, keyboard and mouse.

To create your matching rules:
1. Go to "Matching" in the left navigation.
2. Go to the "Data Matching" tab.
3. Click "Product cross-selling in the top right corner. A new dialog will appear for creating rules.
4. Click 'Add rule' and click 'select field' to create your matching rules.

Matching by Field vs. Value
Field: Select a field from your product feed to compare product properties.
Value: Enter a specific value that a product property must match (e.g contains value keyboards).

Understanding the two product types
When creating matching rules, you can select properties from two different products:

  • Cross-sell product: The additional product that could be recommended alongside your main advice, such as a headset, keyboard or mouse.
  • Advised main product: The main product recommended to the shopper through your advice, such as the laptop in our example.

Example: Matching compatible accessories
Let's say your feed contains a compatible_ids field on your accessory products. This field contains the IDs of the laptops each accessory is compatible with.

You can create the following matching rule:

If -- > Cross-sell product: compatible_ids --> contains --> field --> Advised main product: id

This ensures that accessories are only recommended when they're compatible with the advised laptop.

This can also be the other way around when your product has a compatible_skus field on the main product.

For this example you can create the following matching rule:
If --> Cross-sell product: sku --> Is one of --> Advised main product: compatible_skus.

You can separate values with commas (,), semicolons (;) or pipes (|).

Combining multiple conditions
You can also combine conditions to make your recommendations more specific. For example, you could require accessories to be compatible with the advised laptop and have the same brand as the laptop.

This gives you control over which additional products can be recommended alongside your main advice.

4. Prioritize cross-sell products with preferences

Besides determining which products can be recommended, you can set preferences to influence which cross-sell products are shown first. For example, you may want to prioritize accessories from the same brand as the advised main product, without excluding compatible accessories from other brands.

Required matches vs. preferences
The cross-sell dialog contains two types of rules:

  • Only match products: Products that do not meet these conditions are excluded.
  • Prefer products: Products that meet these conditions receive a higher score. Products that do not meet them can still be recommended, as long as they meet your required matching rules.

To add a preference:

  1. Open the Product cross-selling dialog under Matching → Data Matching.
  2. Click Add → Add ruleset. A new Prefer products ruleset will appear.
  3. Add the conditions for your preference. Just like required matching rules, you can compare a cross-sell product with a specific value or a field from the advised main product.
  4. Click weight to adjust the weight of the ruleset. A higher weight gives that preference more influence on the ranking.

Example: Prefer accessories from the same brand
Using the laptop example above, keep compatibility as a required condition under Only match products.

Cross-sell product: compatible_ids → contains → field → Advised main product: id

Then add a Prefer products ruleset:
Cross-sell product: brand → contains → field → Advised main product: brand

This gives compatible accessories from the same brand a higher score, while compatible accessories from other brands remain eligible.

Combining multiple preferences
Each preference ruleset has its own weight, which defaults to 1. Products that match multiple preference rulesets receive a score contribution from each matching ruleset.

For example, you could give a same-brand preference a weight of 2 and a lower-price preference a weight of 1. This makes matching the brand contribute more to the ranking than matching the price preference.

Preferences influence ranking; they do not override required matching rules or the cross-sell category restrictions described above.
